Hyrox Training

What is Hyrox?

Hyrox is an indoor fitness race: 8 kilometres of running, split into eight 1 kilometre runs, with a workout station after each one. The stations always come in the same order: SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls. Because the order never changes, you can train for exactly the race you will run.

Training for it means building three things together: running that holds up on tired legs, strength for the sleds, carries and lunges, and the conditioning to recover between them. Ben Leach, a strength and conditioning coach who specialises in hybrid and Hyrox performance, coaches at UNTIL Soho, and the free matching call pairs you with him or another Hyrox coach from the team. The race readiness calculator projects your running time from a recent 5k. HYROX London is at ExCeL from 2 to 6 December 2026.

Sessions cost from £80 an hour with no UNTIL membership. How the programme works sets out each step.

The benefits of coached Hyrox training

Running that holds up after the stations

Your runs are programmed around the stations, so you practise running on tired legs. That is exactly what race day asks for.

Technique on every station

Sled, wall ball and lunge technique is coached within the set, so each station costs less energy and you reach the next run with more left.

Strength that makes the sleds lighter

A stronger lower body and trunk move the sleds faster for the same effort. Strength work anchors the programme for that reason.

A pacing plan for race day

Your 5k time and your station times give you target splits, so you start at a pace you can hold to the finish.

Recovery built into the week

Hard sessions are spaced so you recover between them. Progress comes from the training you absorb, and more hard sessions do not always mean more progress.

One plan for all of it

Running, strength and conditioning sit in one programme, so none of them is left to chance and nothing is trained twice by accident.

What holds a Hyrox time back

  • Running fresh in training but racing on tired legs, so the later kilometres fall apart
  • Treating the stations as a class workout instead of practising the real distances and loads
  • Grip that gives out on the sled pull and the farmers carry before the legs do
  • No pacing plan, so the first two runs go too fast and the wall balls arrive with nothing left
  • Plenty of conditioning but not enough strength to move the sleds efficiently
  • A race simulation every week, which leaves no time to recover and improve

FAQs

How long does it take to train for Hyrox?

Most people give themselves 12 to 16 weeks, which is long enough to build running volume, learn the stations and practise pacing. If you already run and lift regularly, 8 weeks can be enough. Your coach sets the length of the block around your race date and your starting point on the matching call.

Do I need to be a runner to do Hyrox?

No. Running is a big part of the race, so it matters, but plenty of people start Hyrox from a gym background and build the running as they go. The programme starts from your current 5k time and builds your running volume steadily alongside the strength work for the stations.

How many times a week should I train for Hyrox?

Most people do two coached sessions a week and two or three runs on their own. The coached sessions cover the stations, strength and technique, where coaching makes the biggest difference. Your runs follow the plan your coach writes, so the whole week builds towards race day.

What is the difference between Hyrox Open and Pro?

Both divisions run the same 8 kilometres and the same eight stations in the same order. Pro uses heavier weights on the sleds, the farmers carry, the sandbag lunges and the wall balls. Most people race Open first, and your coach can help you decide whether your strength numbers are ready for Pro.

Yes. The gym floor at UNTIL Soho has a marked sprint lane, free weights and kettlebells, and your coach adapts any station the club does not have. Sessions cost from £80 an hour, you do not need an UNTIL membership, and the matching call to find your Hyrox coach is free.
